At what point does hearing about how great old Jeep Cherokees are get old?
I mean, I like Jeeps. But there things that are really great that people just don’t know about, and then there are things that people that love them think are great are actually just mediocre at best.
I’m afraid old Cherokees - and especially the engines in them - are in that second group.
I’d much rather hear someone do the David Tracy schtick on the new GTO or the E36 - cars that were overshadowed by previous (and/or subsequent) generations and are overlooked now, but are hidden gems if you’re one of those people in the know. Both of those cars are modifiable six ways from Sunday, with incredible aftermarkets and forum support. There’s so much someone could do.
These Jeep articles are just starting to get old.
I don’t mind the schtick - I just want a different subject.

Yeah, we should focus instead on the real unsung hero. The NA Miata.

I have but one vehicle in my vast array of vehicle ownership that I would not, under any circumstance, take back. Mine is the ‘85 Cherokee two door with the 2.8. It was the without hesitation the worst piece of crap I owned (it was 6 years old when I bought it). I had a Yukon with $15k in warranty receipts that I’d welcome back with open arms.
I know others like them, and have had good luck with them, but I will never, ever own a Cherokee again.

Had it been the 4.0L you could still be driving it!

I won’t disagree with that! The 2.8 was terrible.

I’ve owned an XJ for 14 years. At first I bought it because it was a way out of my fire hazard ‘92 S-10 Blazer, and sold it about a year later, then several months later after missing it quite a bit, my mom bought it back for me. My mom passed away a few years after that, so I only keep it for sentimental reasons. As a vehicle, it’s marginal at best. Designed as a last gasp from a failing car company, it’s made with only the thinnest, cheapest sheetmetal, and rusts away at the thought of asking for a salt packet in the McDonald’s drive through. The 4.0 it absolutely no more reliable than 90% of the other engines out there. They’re prone to sludge, overheating, cracked heads and main and rod bearing failures. They’re an awful, archaic design with a reverse-flow cylinder head and they never got roller anything in the valvetrain (make sure you’ve got ZDDP!). They’re small, uncomfortable, cramped, finnicky, unreliable and poorly designed.
I’ll never sell mine, but I’ll always wish it was a TJ.
